Getting a learner driver permit is the first step to getting a driver license. Permits are valid for approximately 5 years (the exact expiration date depends on your date of birth and the date that you apply). You must be 16 years or older to apply.
Once you pass written test, you'll get a temporary learner's permit right away and a permanent one in the mail in a few weeks. Your learner's permit is valid for five years. Find DMV link above.
Once you have a learner permit, you must pass a DMV road test to get your driver license. You must have: a valid NYS photo learner permit, an original 5-hour Pre-licensing course certificate (MV-278) (or online completion), or Driver Education Completion certificate (MV-285) to give to the license examiner when you take your road test. If you are under 18, you must also bring to the road test a completed Certification of Supervised Driving (MV-262) signed by your parent or guardian.
