You can practice with a licensed adult driver who meets NYS requirements. Always drive in safe areas and avoid highways until you feel comfortable and your instructor recommends it.
It depends on your experience, age and how often you practice. Many beginners take 6–10 lessons; experienced drivers may need fewer. Your instructor will recommend a plan after the first lesson.
