The exam is short, but it’s very precise. Examiners focus on your observation, lane control, smooth braking, and how safely you react to traffic – not on perfection.

What you must bring to your road test
Before you leave home, double-check these items. Without them, the examiner can cancel your test and mark it as a no-show.
- NYS Learner Permit – physical, valid, easy to read.
- 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course Certificate (MV-278) – no certificate, no test.
- Road test appointment confirmation – printed or on your phone.
- Proper car for the test – valid registration, inspection, insurance, working lights and signals.
- Licensed supervising driver – must have a valid driver license and be old enough to supervise.
If anything is missing or expired, the DMV can refuse to test you. Our office can help you check your documents before the exam.
What happens during the test – step by step
Routes are different, but the structure is almost always the same. You will show that you can start, stop, turn, park, change lanes and react to traffic calmly and safely.

Avoid these mistakes on your New York Road Test
- Rolling through stop signs or stopping too far into the intersection.
- Not checking mirrors before braking, turning or changing lanes.
- Forgetting to signal, or signaling at the last second.
- Driving too fast for conditions – or too slowly and blocking traffic.
- Hitting, rubbing or riding the curb while parking or turning.
- Not looking over the shoulder into the blind spot before lane change.
Remember: more than 30 points = fail. 30 points or less = you pass.

- Talk out loud. Say what you see: “Checking mirrors… slowing down… clear on the left…” – the examiner hears your awareness.
- Look far ahead, not at the hood. Your steering becomes smoother and you stay centered in your lane.
- Slow parking is smart parking. Take your time with parallel parking – accuracy is more important than speed.
- Relax your hands and shoulders. Tension makes your movements jerky; a light grip keeps the car under control.
- Observation first, action second. Always look, then move – never the other way around.

New York Road Test – FAQ
How many points can I lose and still pass?
You pass with 30 points or less. If you receive 31 points or more, you fail the test and will need another appointment.
How long is the New York Road Test?
Usually around 7–10 minutes of actual driving time, plus a few minutes before and after for instructions and scoring.
Can I use my own car for the test?
Yes, if it has valid registration, inspection, insurance, and all lights, signals, horn and seat belts work correctly. If there is a problem, the examiner may cancel the test.
Can I use Amethyst Driving School car?
Absolutely. Our road test packages include a clean, comfortable car that meets all DMV requirements, plus a warm-up lesson before the exam.
Do I need the 5-hour Pre-Licensing Course certificate?
Yes. Without a valid MV-278 certificate, the DMV cannot let you take the road test. If you still need the class, we can help you register for our Zoom 5-hour course.
What happens if I fail the test?
You can book another exam. Our instructors will review your score sheet, explain your mistakes, and design 1–2 focused lessons to fix them before the next attempt.
