5-Hour or 6-Hour: choose the right course.
Pre-licensing and defensive driving serve different purposes. Check which one matches your licensing or insurance goal.
5-Hour Pre-Licensing
For new drivers meeting the pre-licensing requirement before the New York road test, unless they have qualifying driver education. A valid NY learner permit is required. This classroom curriculum is separate from practical driving lessons.
Live virtual class at Amethyst
Amethyst offers a scheduled instructor-led virtual class. DMV distinguishes this format from self-paced online pre-licensing. Successful virtual-class participants receive an MV-278 certificate; follow the school’s attendance and certificate instructions.
6-Hour Defensive Driving
The Point and Insurance Reduction Program is a different program, with eligibility and benefits determined by DMV and the approved provider. It does not replace pre-licensing. Select your state and review the provider’s details before enrolling.
Still unsure which one you need?
If you want to schedule your first road test, review the pre-licensing requirements. If your goal is defensive-driving benefits for an existing license, review the relevant approved course. Ask the office to help you find the correct page.
