Parallel parking can be intimidating for beginners, but with practice, it becomes a straightforward task. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you parallel park:
Step 1: Find a Suitable Space
Look for a parking space that is at least one and a half times the length of your vehicle. This extra space is essential for maneuvering your car into the spot.
Step 2: Position Your Car
Drive up next to the car in front of the parking space, aligning your car’s rear tires with that car’s rear bumper. Keep about 2 to 3 feet of space between the cars.
Step 3: Check Mirrors and Blind Spots
Before you start moving, check your rearview and side mirrors, and look over your shoulder for any approaching vehicles or cyclists. Signal towards the parking space to let others know your intention.
Step 4: Start Reversing
While looking over your right shoulder through the rear window, start reversing slowly. Turn your steering wheel all the way to the right (in countries where you drive on the right side of the road) or to the left (in countries where you drive on the left side).
Step 5: Straighten and Adjust
When your car starts to enter the parking space and your front passenger door is aligned with the rear bumper of the car in front of the space, start straightening your steering wheel while continuing to reverse.
Once your car is parallel to the curb, if necessary, adjust your position by moving forward or backward to ensure there’s equal space in front and behind your vehicle.
Step 6: Align with the Curb
Ideally, your car should be parallel and close to the curb, within 12-18 inches. If not, you may need to straighten your car by moving forward and adjusting.
